At Sweet Avenue, we’re committed to doing what we can to lessen our impact on the environment. As a business, we have the potential to eat up far more than our share, and while that’s the tempting, easy path, we make every effort to take the approach that’s better for our planet. We wanted to take a little time today and explain some of the ways that we, as a small business, have made small changes that all add up to help mother earth.
We’ve always been recyclers, both at home and at work, but now in addition to the recycling we’re going a bit further to do our part. For example, we replaced our disposable paper plates with reusable melamine plates (vintage, not new). We get most of our furniture from IKEA, not just because it’s inexpensive and awesome, but because IKEA strives to reduce packaging and maximize the amount of product they can transport which equals a huge savings for the environment.
Another cool thing we’ve started is that we’ve replaced our plastic flatware with eco-friendly biodegradable/compostable cutlery made from corn and potatoes. It’s really awesome stuff, and it has a significantly lower impact on landfills than the plastic variety, but best of all is that you’d never know they weren’t plastic. Oh, and because plastic bags are a bit of a necessary evil, we just replaced our old, do-nothing-for-the-environment plastic bags with new ones that are 30% thinner and made with 30% recycled materials (also, the new ones are pink, which has no bearing on the environment, but it makes them even more awesome).
While we’re discussing this stuff, we’d also like to point out how much we love Method and Seventh Generation. Both make great products that we use daily like trash bags made from post-consumer materials, paper towels made from recycled materials, along with various soaps and cleaners that are far, far better for the environment than traditional bleaches and soaps.
All of these things mean we end up spending a few dollars more a week to our suppliers, but in our minds, the savings to the environment is more than worth it.
