Bark in the Park

This past Sunday, we visited Liberty State Park in Jersey City for Liberty Humane Society’s Bark in the Park event.

Every year hundreds of dogs and their owners gather in Liberty State Park for this event, along with dozens of vendors of dog-related products. We had a lot of fun at the event with our pitbull/boxer mix, Rex. We were happy to meet some of the folks behind Pinups for Pitbulls, an organization that works to educate the public about the history and temperament of the American Pit Bull. They try to raise awareness about Breed Specific Legislation and Breed-Specific abuse, and to raise funds for bully-breed-friendly rescues and dogs in need. Pitbulls are a very misunderstood breed, and since our own dog, Rex, is a pitbull mix, we appreciate the work that groups like this do to raise awareness! Unfortunately certain countries like the UK, and even some cities within the US have placed bans on pitbulls due to their bad reputation. Even PETA, who claims to be an animal rights organization, has recommended against adopting pitbulls. We think it’s obvious that any dog, of any breed, can become violent, and studies show that it has much more to do with the dog’s environment and supervision than it does with their breed. If you are considering adopting a dog, don’t overlook the abundance of pitbulls at your local animal shelter. They are very loving, loyal and protective dogs.
